Regarding regarding Textbook, Materials and Device Distribution Schedule & Device Requests
This update provides you with our final textbook and device distribution schedule and other general updates for the opening of school for distance learning off campus. See attachment or in the body of this post. Thank you.
Textbook & Device Distribution Guidelines Fall 2020-2021
This year, for the safety and health of all students and families, students will have access to online digital copies of their textbooks through Schoology within your courses. If needed or preferred, hard copies of the textbooks may be checked out. Our distribution schedules are listed below for each grade level.
Grades 4-6 –Textbooks will be distributed by alphabetical order by students’ last names. Please see the schedule below for your assigned time slot. See Figure 1.
Grades 7-11 –Textbooks will be distributed by their homeroom classes. Students’ homeroom teachers remain the same as last school year. See Figure 1.
Grade 12 – Seniors will pick up their textbooks on August 19, 2020. Seniors will have additional instructions forthcoming; please expect to receive your “senior letter” soon.

*The make-up times are added to accommodate families that have schedule conflicts with the assigned schedule and have more than one student attending school at SOCES.
Class Schedules, Schoology Access Codes and Zoom Meeting ID Numbers
Please be advised that you may view your child’s class schedule by August 10th in Schoology. We highly recommend that you obtain your class schedule prior to picking up your textbooks.
In your courses within Schoology, eventually you will find Zoom meeting ID numbers and syllabi there, as well. Each syllabus will include information related to the teacher’s “synchronous” class time, software, Zoom meeting information, Schoology access codes, and whatnot.
Bell Schedule Update
The teachers’ union (UTLA) and LAUSD have submitted a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to the board of education to be approved. This MOU indicates that classes will be held between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 2:15 p.m. Teachers are expected to work 360 minutes per day on average. Our team is currently determining the precise times for “synchronous” and “asynchronous” instruction for each course. We aim to share our bell schedule with you next week. Teachers will provide their students with a regular weekly schedule of services and office hours.
First Day of Instruction
The MOU indicates that teachers will have additional days for planning and preparation, therefore students will be invited to a “Virtual Welcome” the afternoon of August 18, 2020, students will receive contact from teachers in the afternoon of August 19, 2020, and classes will begin on August 20, 2020.

Please request your device or hotspot; it is important to request a device prior to coming in on campus.

Safety Protocols on Campus
With Los Angeles County experiencing a dramatic rise in COVID-19 infections and hospitalizations, it is important for all of us to follow the guidelines from the CDC on social distancing and safety protocols whenever we are on school campus; masks to cover your nose and mouth are required. Student Yearbook & ID Photos – Room 301
Students who do not have a picture in our database will be contacted by Ms. Tabares, Magnet Coordinator, to pick up their textbooks on August 14, 2020, from 8:00 a.m. to noon and take a picture in Room 301. All other students will be using their pictures from the previous school year.
There will be no locker distribution since all of our students will be participating in a distance online program.
Counselors can be emailed with requests for course changes. Please consider using the online textbooks if you are considering class changes. Hard copies of textbooks can be picked up throughout the semester.
