SOCES Football Looks to Reclaim Championship Glory

In the last three years, the SOCES Football team has faced a lot of accomplishments and a lot of success. In the 2016 season, the Knights came out and won their first-ever CIF championship. In the 2017 season, the Knights went far in the CIF playoffs, however, lost a heartbreaker in the championship game. The Knights football team looks to build on their momentum from the last two seasons to go far and win their second championship in three years. This season the Knights look for senior captain’s Daniel Llamas, Bryce Horton, Liam Etichson, Manolo Franco and Harrison Levin to lead this team in a positive way.

With Coach Joe leaving the team for personal reasons, the team brought back former assistant coach Damien Vinarsky to lead the Knights in the right direction.  In coach Vinarsky’s debut as head coach, the Knights played Chadwick High School. The Knights battled their hearts out but unfortunately took a big loss to Chadwick High School. The Knights were defeated 50-8. The Knights had very limited passing success as it was Liam Etichson’s first start as the quarterback. He completed 3 of 8 passed for only 40 yards passing; however, he had 40 rushing yards.

The run game was successful near the end of the game where Senior Captain and Running back Daniel Llamas had 7 carries for 35 rushing yards and the lone touchdown of the game. Daniel was also involved in the passing game with 2 receptions for 20 receiving yards. He was also involved in the defensive game where he had an impressive 10 tackles.

After the Knights loss against Chadwick, they bounced back against USC Hybrid at home trouncing the Trojans by a score of 68-6. Running back Daniel Llamas had a monster game where he scored 5 touchdowns, 3 rushing and 2 receiving. Senior Quarterback Liam Etichson also had a big game with 2 rushing touchdowns and 3 passing touchdowns. Overall the team played outstanding on both sides of the field.

Unfortunately the next week the Knights fell to Faith Baptist by a score of 68-24. After the loss against Faith Baptist, the Knights fell to 1-2 on the season.

Senior running back Bryce Horton made his season debut vs North Valley Military Institute finding the end zone once and had a lot of big stops on defense. SOCES dominated North Valley Military Institute with a shutout win of 36-0. As usual, Llamas had a great game where he scored 1 rushing touchdown, 2 receiving touchdown and an interception as well. Etichson had a good game through the air where he threw for 2 touchdowns through the air. Senior RB Brian Torres contributed to the lead with a touchdown of his own. Senior Defensive Back Fernando Munoz was able to contribute to the defense with an interception of his own. The offensive line protected their quarterback thanks to their leader on the offensive line Manolo Franco. Overall the Knights dominated North Valley Military Institute on both sides of the field.

After the big win at home, the Knights improve their season at 2-2 on the year. In the four games the Knights have played so far they have scored 136 points on offense and only allowed 124 points on the season. They have been very strong on the home field as they went 2-1 there, and 0-1 on the road. “Our expectation for the rest of the season is to go all the way and win a championship,” says senior Bryce Horton. Showing how they hope to keep up their success on the home and improve their record on the road with such high goals for this year.
