SOCES Earns the California Distinguished Schools in Los Angeles County

Dear Colleagues,

It is my pleasure to recognize the California Distinguished Schools in Los Angeles County that have earned the additional honor of having an Exemplary Program in Arts Education, Career Technical Education or Physical Activity and Nutrition.

Distinguished Schools applied separately for these honors. Nine of the 22 Exemplary Program Award winners statewide are located in our county:

  • El Segundo USD: El Segundo HS (Arts)
  • Glendale USD: Clark Magnet HS (CTE) and Crescenta Valley HS (Arts, PAN)
  • Hermosa Beach City Elementary: Hermosa Valley ES (PAN)
  • Los Angeles USD: Renaissance Arts Academy (Arts) and Sherman Oaks Center for Enriched Studies (CTE)
  • Temple City USD: Temple City HS (CTE)
  • Torrance USD: West HS (Arts)
  • Walnut Valley USD: South Pointe MS (Arts)

I would also like to commend those honored in the 2019 California Green Ribbon Schools Awards program. Award winners are schools that are reducing environmental impact and costs, improving health and wellness or providing effective environmental education.

Two schools and one district in Los Angeles County have been recognized:

  • Eagle Rock Elementary/Los Angeles USD (Green Achiever and nominee for the U.S. Department of Education’s Green Ribbon Schools recognition program)
  • Los Coyotes Middle School/Norwalk-La Mirada USD (Bronze)
  • Hermosa Beach City Elementary SD (Silver)

Congratulations to all these exemplary and innovative programs for their outstanding efforts on behalf of the young people of Los Angeles County.

Sincerely,

Debra Duardo, M.S.W., Ed.D.

Sidney Stern: Social Justice Warrior

By Harrison Pomerantz

“One small difference matters.”

-Sidney Stern

Amidst a hectic eighth grade school year and a buzzing social life, SOCES student, Sidney Stern fights for social justice and political activism.  When Sidney was young, she questioned world hatred and challenged the idea of genocide. The Jewish World Watch, whose catchphrase is, “Do not stand idly by,” caught the attention of Sidney, and she decided to officially join the fight.

The Jewish World Watch (JWW) practices the ideas of Judaism, by spreading awareness to fight, relieve, and end genocide worldwide.  Sidney was initially attracted to the JWW because it correlated her religion and outlook on life into one group. Since, Sydney has expanded beyond the horizon of the JWW, by creating a Jewelry brand in which the proceeds help fight genocide, and even advocating on behalf of the victims of genocide in front of the US congress.

Sidney Stern continues her fight this weekend, with the JWW “Walk to End Genocide”. This is a march to, “Unleash your inner activism,” and spread awareness for a cause that is typically overlooked.

“March to go get the message out and every person makes a difference”

The march is Sunday, March 31, 2019, from 10am-1pm, at Pan Pacific Park.  Register or Donate today to support the fight, at walktoendgenocide.org/la.

Click on the link below to listen to our podcast with Sidney,  It was a great conversation where we talk about the Genocide March, humanitarian concerns in the Congo, and much more. This is our premiere show of our SOCES Media’s new podcast, SOCES UnPak’d.

SOCES Breaks Ground

On Monday, March 4, the SOCES community gathered on what used to be the student parking lot to celebrate the official ground breaking for the new gymnasium and academic wings that will soon grace the campus.

Look for the whole story on Wednesday, March 5.

Mr. Zeccola named LAUSD Teacher of the Year

Congratulations to Mr. Zeccola for being named one of the LAUSD Teachers of the Year. He is one of five teachers within the district to receive the honor and will now be considered for LA County Teacher of the year.

Mr Zeccola

Congratulations to all the SOCES Engineering Academy Seniors and their Achievements!

Camp updates for the Fall (2018)

Attention Parents of Current 4th and 5th Grade Students

Attached are the flyers for NEXT years 5th grade Astrocamp (so this applies to THIS year’s 4th graders) and NEXT year’s 6th Grade PaliCamp (so this year’s 5th graders) trips.  Your children should have brought, or will be bringing, home these flyers in their backpacks.

The purpose of these flyers is to:

  • Let you know that these optional overnight trips will be occuring EARLY in the school year.
  • Allow you to save money if you would like your child to participate.
  • Let you know that we will be having a meeting the FIRST WEEK of school to get all of the paperwork started.

Why are we starting so early? Space is limited, and the October 13th trip will sneak up on us really fast once school starts. We want everyone to have an opportunity to plan because the deadline for this trip will be right at the beginning of the school year.
